Avoid Ageism and Ageist Remarks

Ageism happens when people are judged or treated unfairly just because of their age. Negative stereotypes about growing older can hurt in many ways — affecting health, careers, friendships, confidence and even mental well-being. Sometimes, without realizing it, we even direct these attitudes toward ourselves.

Instead of saying, "You look great for your age." Say, "You look great!"

WHY IT’S HARMFUL: Can feel patronizing, suggests that the person only looks good within the context of their age.

RESPECTFUL ALTERNATIVES: “You look great!” or “I love your style!”

Instead of saying, "You're too old for that." Say, "Let's explore options that suit your goals."

WHY IT’S HARMFUL: Dismisses ability and autonomy.

RESPECTFUL ALTERNATIVES: “Let’s explore safe options that suit your goals.”

Instead of saying, "They're still so sharp for their age." Say, "They are very insightful and thoughtful."

WHY IT’S HARMFUL: Implies cognitive decline is expected.

RESPECTFUL ALTERNATIVES: “They are very insightful and thoughtful”

Instead of using "Elderly" as a noun. Say, "Older adult"

WHY IT’S HARMFUL: Reduces person to an age category.

RESPECTFUL ALTERNATIVES: “Older adult” or “person aged _____”

Instead of saying, "Young at heart." Say, "Active" or "Engaged"

WHY IT’S HARMFUL: Suggest age defines capabilities.

RESPECTFUL ALTERNATIVES: “Active” or “engaged”
